Assessed Tax Value Opportunity
Here is a proposal from the Association’s attorney to challenge the assessed value on your home used for real estate tax purposes. Assessed values are reviewed every four years. If your assessed value is reduced, that number will be used in calculating your taxes for the next four years. If your home is granted a reduction resulting in reduced taxes, the attorney’s fee will be 30% of the savings you realize in the first year. The entire savings is yours to keep for years 2, 3 and 4. If your home is not granted a reduction, you will owe nothing as the work is being done on a contingency basis. If you wish to participate, please fill out and sign the last page of the link to

Boxwood Winter Burn
There is a lot of winter burn on boxwood this year. The plants appear straw colored on the outside or just a few branches. If there is green on the inside, there is a good chance it can be trimmed off, and the plant can rejuvenate. Mariani does not want homeowners to think they need to replace all of their boxwood. It is not in Mariani's contract for the crew to take time to prune at this time, but they can offer specialized pruning to take care of it. If interested, please contact Christine Detweiler, and she can provide a quote. The pruning would need to be completed now as new growth emerges.

Buckthorn Eradication 2019 Frequently Asked Questions
Buckthorn Clearing FAQ
After the recent Buckthorn Clearing in 2019, several questions have come up in email, text messages and phone calls, and the Glenmore Woods Board wanted to share the responses with everyone. Please let a board member know if you have other questions.
Q: I know buckthorn is non-native and invasive species that everyone is trying to eradicate in the area, but it did provide privacy. We are feeling a little vulnerable because the buckthorn offers no privacy anymore for the cleared areas. What can we plant to provide some privacy?
A: That is understandable. It will get a little better as the growing season progresses and other plants emerge. The Lake County Forest Preserve is willing to add some shrub plantings in the blue area in the future. Also, the Lake County Forest Preserve has provided a brochure on Healthy Hedges here.
Q: For the areas covered in red as well as in blue on the map, what is the plan for the stumps of buckthorn that has been cut down/mowed down in the spring?
A: All stumps have/will be treated with a selective broadleaf herbicide that will kill the roots of the trees to prevent resprouting. This is not 100% effective, unfortunately, so the contractor will need to return (as many times as necessary) to retreat areas to ensure that no stumps resprout.

Buckthorn Clearing 2019
Another incremental step to eradicate buckthorn in Glenmore Woods will continue on the week of February 11, 2019 in conjunction with the Lake County Forest Preserve. The board voted to clear the buckthorn in the area shaded in red in the diagram. The area totals about 6.7 acres. We chose this area based on our budget and aesthetic appeal. The Lake County Forest Preserve will be working with a contractor to do this clearing.
Clearing involves the red area of all invasive trees and shrubs is almost always the first step to restoring a site. Sites that have not been managed over the years will always have woody invasive growth, most commonly buckthorn and honeysuckle, shading out the herbaceous layer. These species both block out sunlight, which does not allow any other plants or trees to grow, as well as become so dense that it renders the area unusable.

North Shore Gas Sewer Inspection
During the week of October 29th, you might have seen contractors around the neighborhood. North Shore Gas was supposed to deliver letters to all residents in Glenmore Woods, but quick poll would suggest that no homeowners received this letter, which can be found here.
It states that North Shore Gas previously upgraded the natural gas pipes in Glenmore Woods. A trenchless digging technology was used to install the new pipes to minimize disruptions to streets, parkways, sidewalks and lawns. The contractors are checking sewer lines in Glenmore Woods as a precaution. In most cases, the contractors can inspect from the street, but might need to gain access into homes to complete the inspection. Feel free to call 312-800-3280 with questions or concerns.
