Several residents have asked about the Wood Duck Nesting Box that was erected over the winter by the West pond. The construction and placement of Wood Duck Nesting Boxes is a project that the Boy Scouts have been doing in the area for a few years now.
The Wood Duck population has recently reached sustainable numbers after a decline and near extinction in the early 1900's. The West pond is the ideal breading habitat for the Wood Duck as they prefer wooded ponds or swamps. Without the nesting boxes, a Wood Duck could nest in old Woodpecker holes, which causes one to summate that the Wood Ducks should have a wide variety of nesting choices in the Lake County area.
